Maui Man Sentenced in Internet Gambling Foot Locker Theft Case
It happens every so often. It is not common like some would have you believe. But every once in a while, a person gets caught up in their addiction problems when dealing with Internet gambling.
A Maui man, Bill Im, was just your ordinary employee of Foot Locker in Maui. He ended up in Maui on a manager's training program. He was away from friends and family. So he turned to Internet gambling as a form of escape from everyday work.
That is the picture that Im's defense attorney portrayed as his client was set to be sentenced. Im plead no contest to first degree theft. he apparently stole money from the company he was working for, to help pay for his Internet gambling.
He was put on five years probation by Second Circuit Judge Joel August. He also must complete 150 hours of probation. "First of all, I am truly sorry for what I have done. It will never happen again," said Im.
In addition to the probation and community service, Im was also ordered to pay back $26,000 in restitution to the company. "He wants to pay back every single cent that he took from Foot Locker," said his attorney, Dean Hoe.
Im has relocated to Honolulu and is currently working at a military exchange, as a manager.
